New Year's Eve

New Year's Eve By Arthur Shapiro

I am not fond of New Year’s Eve, and here’s why.

I grew up in NYC, and as a teenager, I couldn’t wait to go to Times Square to watch the ball drop. It was on 42nd Street, but the closest I could get with my date was 50th Street. It didn’t work out; she kept complaining. We ended

up at a lame party somewhere. She went home with someone else. I was relieved and happy.

Fast forward to NYE with my wife.

The Superbowl By Arthur Shapiro

In 2025, the game is scheduled for February 9 at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana. It is Super Bowl LIX.

It would be fun to look at this uniquely and widely popular event from several perspectives, all of which have to do more with the event than the game itself.

Let’s start with this: Why do they use Roman Numerals, forcing people to remember what they hoped to forget in the 5th grade?

Valentine's Day Thought & Musings By Arthur Shapiro

Valentine's Day

A friend of mine, the world’s most notorious cynic, once described Valentine’s Day as a Hallmark Holiday supported by Godiva Chocolate. Which probably explains his multiple marriages and dateless life. Sure, it’s a commercial occasion, but so what? It’s also a day to celebrate romance and love. A day to tell your partner you love them. I know you should do this all year, not just one day, but having a special moment to reflect and show love is nice. Not to mention a good meal, if you’re so inclined.

From Wikipedia:

Valentine's Day, also called Saint Valentine's Day, is celebrated annually on February 14. It originated as a Christian feast day honoring one or two early Christian martyrs named Saint Valentine and, through later folk traditions, has become a significant cultural, religious, and commercial celebration of romance and love in many regions of the world.

Let’s take a closer look at this day from several perspectives — facts and fun.

St Patrick's Day Thought & Musings By Arthur Shapiro

I’m guessing that the first thing that crossed your mind reading the headline is, “What does this Jewish guy from NYC know about St. Patrick’s

Day.”

I can tell you that my family name was originally O’Shapiro, but I doubt you would believe it. How about if I took my friend's name, Liam O’Rourke? Would you believe it? Probably not. Okay, how about this? I grew up in Brooklyn with friends and neighbors who were in the same melting pot as me and were only too happy to share their culture and history. Or this, “On St. Paddy’s Day, everyone is Irish!”
